Located 200 miles east of Portland, Pendleton is a city of over 16,600 residents situated on the I-84 corridor. Farming and ranching are proud traditions with many "Century Farms" dotting the countryside. The Pendleton area is the largest producer of wheat in the state.
The Umatilla River, with its scenic River Walk, runs through the center of town and is a great spot for fishing or birdwatching. If boating, waterskiing, or windsurfing are more your style, you may want to visit the nearby Columbia River, a hotspot for these activities. Snow skiing is available during the winter season at nearby Anthony Lakes Ski Resort or Ski Bluewood, each only a 1.5 hour drive away.
Pendleton has 21 parks, a large water park, a Dreamland-built skate park, disc golf, and the River Walk. The Parks and Recreation Department schedules many activities and classes throughout the year for children, teens, and adults. These include movie nights in the park, live outdoor music concerts, swim lessons, lifeguard training, gymnastics, basketball camps, tennis camps, art classes, science camps, yoga, softball leagues, music classes, and much more.
The Pendleton schools have an outstanding music program with instruction in band, choir and orchestra at the middle and senior high schools. Pendleton sports programs have long-standing reputations for winning, attributed in large part to the tremendous community pride, spirit, and tradition. Many sports start at the grade school level and continue through high school with a positive attitude and, thus, a winning program.
Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) in Pendleton is a comprehensive community college committed to providing a premier learning environment and support for student success. BMCC offers students quality instruction, affordable tuition, small class sizes, and student support services like tutoring, computer labs, academic advising, and disability accommodations. BMCC uses distance education learning modalities to serve residents of the region as well as a small number of students from around the world.
The City of Pendleton has invested more than $2 million through the Urban Renewal District into improving and restoring the historic downtown area. Through the Pendleton Underground Tours and the many partnerships with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Pendleton captures and shares the essence of the Old West.
Our town recently celebrated the 100 year anniversary of both the world famous Pendleton Woolen Mills and Pendleton Round-Up. While the rodeo is the heart of the Round-Up week, the Round-Up refers to all of the excitement that draws thousands to Pendleton in the second full week in September each year. Pendleton’s Main Street is closed to motorized traffic and becomes a carnival grounds with vendors and live music throughout the week. Whether it’s the Happy Canyon Night Show Pageant, the Indian Pow-Wows and vendor booths, the Westward-Ho! Parade or the nightly shows on Main Street, the whole town transforms into a fun-filled festival with something for everyone. Nearly 755,000 visitors a year make Pendleton their destination for a taste of our history.
