The city of South Bend is the county seat of St. Joseph County. Its name derives from its geography: South Bend is located on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend. South Bend is the fourth largest city in Indiana and houses the prestigious University of Notre Dame. The area was originally settled in the early 18th century by fur traders, and established as a city in 1865. The St. Joseph River shaped South Bend's economy through the mid-20th century. River access assisted heavy industrial development such as that of Studebaker, Oliver Chilled Plow Company and other large corporations.
History
As the shortest portage point between the St. Joseph River and the Kankakee River, this area was well known among Native Americans, fur traders and missionaries who traveled from eastern shores to the Mississippi River and beyond. Officially established in 1830, St. Joseph County was home to the Studebaker family and their iconic Studebaker Automobile Company. It was here that James Oliver developed his Chilled Plow into the most popular plow in the world. Today, the Studebaker National Museum is a popular place to learn more about this important piece of Indiana history.
A South Bend resident is credited with creating Mother’s Day. Frank Herring gave the first public speech asking that a special day be set aside to honor mothers in 1904. Although Congress did not officially declare Mother’s Day as the second Sunday in May until 1914, Herring has since been known as the “Father of Mother’s Day.”

You can quite literally "shop till you drop" in Mishawaka's Grape Road/Main Street shopping corridor. After all, it's the second largest retail center in the state of Indiana.
