Seymour is a southern Indiana town located amidst wildlife refuges and state parks. Its close proximity to industrial centers and interstates make it an easily accessible living environment. Seymour is located one hour south of Indianapolis, one hour north of Louisville and one and one-half hours west of Cincinnati. Nearby universities include Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus and Indiana University in Bloomington.
History
Seymour’s first settler was James Shields, who built a house on the property that is now the city cemetery. His son, Meedy Shields, later inherited the land. In 1852, when plans arose for a railroad connecting Jeffersonville with Indianapolis, Shields convinced civil engineer J. Seymour to build his railroad through Shields’ land. In return, Shields named the area after J. Seymour, and passed a bill requiring trains to stop at all railroad intersections. As a result, Seymour soon became the largest incorporated area in Jackson County.
Jackson County’s covered bridges are beautiful historical landmarks. Medora Covered Bridge, constructed in 1875, is the longest 3-span covered bridge in the United States. Shieldstown Covered Bridge, which was built in 1876 and carried traffic until 1990, is known as the most scenic bridge in Jackson County. Bell’s Ford Covered Bridge was constructed for the Seymour Bridge Company in 1869 and is located between Seymour and Cortland, Indiana. These bridges stand over the White River and create a sense of history and pride for Jackson County residents.
Seymour’s Famous Son
Seymour is the birthplace of John Mellencamp, the famous singer behind the song “Small Town,” which was written about Seymour. Mellencamp has filmed many music videos in his hometown, including “Human Wheels” and “Wild Night.” He also bought a house in Seymour for residents to exhibit and learn about the arts, which has now become the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts. In 2008, John Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2009, Jackson County released an audio driving tour of Mellencamp’s hometown of Seymour. As a result of his fame, the area has welcomed visitors from 48 states and three countries to see the roots of their favorite celebrity.
Outdoor Activities
Seymour’s parks provide outdoor fun for both children and adults. Freeman Field Recreational Facility has a variety of sports fields as well as a two-mile bike/jogging trail. Shields Park Pool, a part of the oldest park in Seymour (designated in 1852) is a 50-meter pool with a water slide and diving well. Hiking trails and paddling rivers can be found ten minutes from Seymour in nearby Clark, Indiana.
Two skiing options are also close to Seymour. Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana, features 9 lifts and 16 runs. Perfect North Slopes just west of Cincinnati has 10 lifts and 23 runs. Seymour also boasts two options for golfers, Hickory Hills Golf Club and Seymour Country Club.
Living in Seymour
Seymour’s Oktoberfest, held each year at the beginning of October, is a popular free event featuring food, drinks, and local entertainment. With exhibitor areas featuring arts and crafts, a 5k walk/run, hot air balloon race, and performances from local bands, the festival is a great celebration for the locals of Seymour.
The Shoppes at Seymour Outlet Center features more than 20 brand name stores at low prices. Shops include Polo Ralph Lauren and Reebok, among others.
Indiana University in Bloomington, a leading teaching and research institution with approximately 40,000 students, is located less than forty miles from Seymour. IU also supports another core campus in Indianapolis, with additional regional campuses throughout the state.
Ivy Tech Community College – Columbus, approximately 20 miles from Seymour, is the state’s largest post-secondary institution. It is also the state’s most affordable college and offers a variety of two- and four-year degree programs.
