Granville County Hospital, 66 Beds. Oxford, with a population of 10,000 is the county seat of Granville County, population 40,000. It is located in the northern piedmont region of North Carolina. There are 20 physicians practicing in the county, with 15 located in Oxford. Oxford is also the site of Granville Medical Center, a 66 bed general hospital that provides acute care to the residents of Granville County. Granville County has a mixed and industrial base. Although 90 percent of the county's labor force was once involved in farming, less than 50 percent are currently engaged in farm related activities. Industrial concerns are diversified, with textiles, pipe, electronics and telephone equipment manufactured. Tobacco, dairy products and livestock represent the major agricultural products. The consolidated school system has 13 schools located throughout the county. In addition to a rigorous academic program, the school system offers a wide range of activities to facilitate development of individual interests. Vance-Granville Community College also serves the educational needs of the county by offering vocational, technical and college transfer programs on a year- round basis. Baccalaureate and graduate degree programs are available, within an hours drive, at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke University, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University. Oxford has a public library system, bi-weekly newspaper, radio station, and theatre. A full range of banking services are available in Oxford, with several financial institutions providing 100% loans ranging from individual mortgage to commercial and industrial loans. Oxford has a local airport that is lighted and equipped for instrument approaches, while the International Raleigh-Durham Airport is only 40 miles away. Many recreational opportunities exist in Oxford and Granville County. Kerr Lake, which borders the County, has over 800 miles of shore line and nine state park areas, each of which have camping, swimming, boating and fishing access to the public. Oxford has a planned recreational program and is developing a public park, which will include a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and picnic area. Country club membership is available with golf, tennis, swimming, dining and social activities. In addition, several game land areas in the country are open to the general public. With only a 3 to 4 hour drive, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Carolina Beaches are also within easy access.
