Huron's population is approximately 12,000. We are a friendly Midwestern community, with a low crime rate, low cost of living, no state income tax, and activities for all ages. Huron is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Huron also offers quality education in our school systems, both public and private. A recent addition to higher education in Huron is the Huron Community Campus, which offers classes in multiple fields, from various South Dakota Universities, with the recent addition of nursing education.
Huron is home to the SD State Fair, rodeo circuit, and many car racing events each year. There is an excellent 4-H program to involve our youth, and many other youth activities, including soccer, hockey, basketball, wrestling, baseball, swim team, softball, dance team, and gymnastics. The community has an excellent indoor family recreation center (Nordby Center) that includes an Olympic-size pool, weight room, racquetball courts, track, basketball, and volleyball courts. Summer recreation includes Splash Central Water Park, which offers a lazy river, free-fall drop slide, and a Master Blaster Water Coaster, along with picnic shelters, walking paths, and a playground area.
