Hilo is a small, rural and multicultural town. The Hilo Medical Center serves ¾ of the island population of 240,000. As the Big Island's leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care, Hilo Medical Center delivers a full range of services and programs. The 20-acre campus includes acute hospital patients, behavioral health unit and our long-term care facility. There are over 1,000 employees and a medical staff comprised 125 physicians, physician assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. The hospital is state owned and operated and serves a community that is underserved with limited primary care and mental health access. This is the premier learning campus on the island, hosting medical students, pharmacy students, nursing students and our own Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency Program.
