Fossil is located in Wheeler County, Oregon, which is North Central Oregon; it is the least populated but one of the most beautiful counties in the state. Wheeler County is as rugged as any in Oregon, with the terrain varying widely from deep river canyons edged in rimrock to high timbered mountains covered in pine and fir. 

The City of Fossil is located in a picturesque valley of the John Day Basin, just three hours drive from Portland and two hours from Bend.

Centrally located to all three units of the world-renowned John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Fossil is a gateway for tourist exploration of the entire John Day River Territory. Our community is located along the Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, which boasts pristine fossil and geologic resources, Old West culture, charming small towns, and awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Fossil digging, fishing, rafting, hiking, camping, photography and star gazing are among the many fun and educational activities that abound here. Designated as a Wild and Scenic River, the John Day River, is known worldwide for its native salmon runs and exceptional bass fishing.

You can easily head to one of the 7-wonders of Oregon, the Painted Hills, which offers awe-inspiring views, and hiking.
