Places like St. Ignace make the most of being along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Here you can stroll the boardwalk, visit a lighthouse, marina, fishing pier and beaches. Or fill your day exploring this historic city’s unique shops, tasty eateries, museums and other attractions such as Castle Rock, Hiawatha National Forest and the Mystery Spot.

A must-see destination is Mackinac Island. Two ferry services operate from the St. Ignace harbor and offer the shortest crossing to the island. This beautiful oasis on Lake Huron will transport you back in time. Hear the clomping of horse hooves, breathe in the sweet aroma of fudge and see the breathtaking vistas and Victorian architecture. History comes to life every day, especially at Fort Mackinac with its 14 restored buildings from the 1700s and exciting reenactments.

When you return to the mainland, drive west on US-2. Scenic Lake Michigan is at every bend. Make your way to Naubinway. Take time to watch commercial fishermen perform the same ritual as their ancestors of the past 150 years have done — delivering fresh whitefish and trout to their docks. Stop at the Naubinway Antique Snowmobile Museum or visit the Garlyn Zoo. Then go north to Curtis and Manistique Lakes, where days of boating, camping and hiking await you. From St. Ignace you can also go northeast to Hessel and Cedarville. This region, known as Les Cheneaux, has 36 islands. Paddle your way around them in the morning and play golf in the afternoon. Naturalists and birding enthusiasts also will find forested trails and quiet stretches of beach nearby.
